Herne Bay Collector Tunnel

New Zealand

With the extension of the Central Interceptor to Point Erin Park in Herne Bay, Ghella continues its long-standing partnership with Watercare. The Herne Bay Collector Tunnel (HBC) project represents a strategic upgrade of the wastewater network in Auckland. While functionally integrated with the Central Interceptor system, it is a distinct and standalone infrastructure. The project includes the construction of approximately 1.5 km of new collector tunnel. It is designed to intercept and convey wastewater from the Herne Bay area directly into the Central Interceptor, significantly reducing the load on the existing local sewer networks. This extension will channel wastewater into the Central Interceptor, alleviating pressure on secondary sewer systems, reducing the risk of overflows, and contributing to the protection and enhancement of local beaches. Thanks to this connection, the project helps mitigate overflow risks during intense rainfall events, improving the resilience of the urban wastewater system and supporting Watercare’s long-term goals in environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation.

Benefits:
1. Reduction in discharges into waterways and coastal areas, contributing to the protection of local beaches and the improvement of marine water quality.
2. Strengthening of the role of the Central Interceptor as a key infrastructure for the sustainable management of wastewater.
3. Support to Auckland’s future growth.
